At its core, the company aims to challenge existing big AI firms like <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/32225\/openai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI<\/a>\u00a0with its alternative to\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/34933\/chatgpt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Announcing formation of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/xai?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">@xAI<\/a> to understand reality<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1679164661869182976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">July 12, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Musk, who has been vocal about his concerns regarding AI&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/fears-behind-artificial-general-intelligence-agi\">potential for harm<\/a>, intends to build a safer AI by creating a &#8220;maximally curious&#8221; AI that seeks to understand the true nature of the universe, he said in a Twitter Spaces event Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that this approach will be more pro-humanity and aims to mitigate the risks associated with\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/32855\/superintelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">superintelligence<\/a>, which he predicts will arrive within the next five to six years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it tried to understand the true nature of the universe, that&#8217;s actually the best thing that I can come up with from an AI safety standpoint,&#8221; the billionaire said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think it is going to be pro-humanity from the standpoint that humanity is just much more interesting than not-humanity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span id=\"xai_team_consists_of_engineers_from_google_and_microsoft\">xAI Team Consists of Engineers From Google and Microsoft<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The team at xAI comprises\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/33515\/artificial-intelligence-engineer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI engineers<\/a>\u00a0from prominent tech companies such as Google&#8217;s DeepMind and Microsoft. Igor Babuschkin, Tony Wu, Christian Szegedy, and Greg Yang are among the notable members of the team that either previously worked at\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/5359\/google\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a>\u00a0or Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the xAI team is advised by Dan Hendricks, who leads the Center for AI Safety. Hendricks, who has completed a Ph.D. in <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/592\/computer-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">computer science<\/a>\u00a0at the University of California, specializes in identifying and managing the risks associated with AI technology.<\/p>\n<p>Musk&#8217;s new venture comes after his involvement with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Despite co-founding OpenAI in 2015, Musk stepped down from the company&#8217;s board in 2018 due to a conflict of interest with his other businesses.<\/p>\n<p>As of late, he has been more vocal about the company, saying that it has strayed from his original open-source intentions. With xAI, Musk aims to\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/who-are-the-competitors-of-chatgpt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compete against OpenAI&#8217;s ChatGPT<\/a>, as well as\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/bard-google-bard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google&#8217;s Bard<\/a>\u00a0and Microsoft&#8217;s Bing AI.<\/p>\n<p>Musk&#8217;s involvement in the AI industry has been characterized by both support and criticism. They seem to believe that developing a keen curiosity about humanity and the universe will be key to ensuring AI safety.<\/p>\n<p>xAI is positioned as a separate entity from Musk&#8217;s other ventures, but it will collaborate closely with\u00a0Twitter, Tesla, and other companies, according to the website.
