However, satellite economics favor MEO constellations if done properly. The human population only covers about 5% of the planet\u2019s surface, so LEO satellites aren\u2019t in use some 90 to 95% of the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can \u2014 and have done in the past \u2014 integrate some Starlink offerings into their portfolio if customers ask for it, adding them into their multi-orbit-multi-frequency band fleets to provide even higher resilience and diversity,\u201d Kern said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf absolutely necessary, and if customer demand is consistent and sufficiently large, they could always invest in their own LEO fleet going forward given their combined size.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span id=\"understanding_earth_orbits_markets_and_technologies\">Understanding Earth Orbits Markets and Technologies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To understand how the merger of SES and Intelsat can drive competition into high gears, it&#8217;s essential to understand Earth&#8217;s orbits and which orbits companies master today \u2014 each orbit has its own market and unique characteristics.<\/p>\n<h3>GEO and MEO Orbits<\/h3>\n<p>The Business Research Company predicted that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einnews.com\/pr_news\/711346447\/geo-satellite-market-size-share-and-growth-analysis-for-2024-2033\" target=\"_blank\">GEO market will reach $20.94 billion in 2028<\/a> at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5% driven by growing demand for telecommunications services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGEO is highly prized for its stable, fixed viewpoint relative to the Earth,\u201d Kaczmarek said. \u201cThis unique position is critical not just for communication and broadcasting but also for strategic surveillance and defense purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mordorintelligence.com\/industry-reports\/global-meo-satellite-market\" target=\"_blank\">Mordor Intelligence<\/a> set the MEO sector\u2019s value at $47.44 billion in 2024 and says it is expected to reach <b>$80.15 billion by 2029. <\/b>The big players in this orbit are the commercial, military, and government sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Companies like <b>Lockheed Martin<\/b>, <b>Airbus Defense and Space Company<\/b>, <b>Northrop Grumman Corporation<\/b>, <b>Boeing Company<\/b>, <b>Thales Group<\/b>, and organizations like <b>NOAA<\/b>, <b>NASA<\/b>, <b>USAF<\/b>, the <b>US Navy<\/b>, and <b>DARPA<\/b> have built their reputations in GEO and MEO orbits.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian satellite industry is also well-established and advanced, while China is rapidly catching up.<\/p>\n<h3>LEO Orbit<\/h3>\n<p>In contrast, the LEO satellite market is expected to grow from <b>$12.6 billion in 2024 to $23.2 billion by 2029<\/b>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/pdfdownloadNew.asp?id=252330251\" target=\"_blank\">Markets and Markets<\/a>. The sector is scaling for good reasons. Operators must constantly maneuver satellites to avoid collisions and manage frequencies to prevent signal interference, involving sophisticated algorithms and often real-time decision-making.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span id=\"innovation_and_the_future_of_satellites\">Innovation and the Future of Satellites<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While the future of the satellite industry will undoubtedly be shaped by the heavyweight names in the satellite industry, new startups, and an expanding supply chain, will play a critical role.<\/p>\n<p>A report by Space Capital found that global investments in space startups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/space\/space-startup-funding-jumps-fourth-quarter-positive-sign-2024-report-2024-01-16\/\" target=\"_blank\">jumped 31% in the fourth quarter of 2024<\/a>. The venture capital firm said funding in space companies rose to $4.6 billion in the quarter, taking the <b>total for 2023 to $17.9 billion.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, launches are at an all-time high. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacefoundation.org\/2024\/01\/23\/the-space-report-2023-q4\/\" target=\"_blank\">Space Foundation<\/a> reported a 33% increase in U.S. launch attempts, a 50% year-over-year growth in commercial launches, and a 23% year-over-year rise in satellite deployment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn-orbit servicing is prolonging satellite lifespans and mitigating space debris,\u201d Kaczmarek added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are smaller, more affordable satellites that are opening up new applications and business models.
