ApeCoin (APE)<\/h3>\n<p>2023 was not a good year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/34529\/non-fungible-token-nft\">non-fungible tokens<\/a> (NFT), and nothing summed up the situation better than the crash of Bored Ape Yacht Club&#8217;s ApeCoin (APE) to an all-time low of about $1. As of 12 December 2023, APE was down over 50% year-to-date (YTD).<\/p>\n<p>Back in March 2022, ApeCoin made a blistering debut as the token soared to a record high of $39.4 within the first two months. But the story has gone from riches-to-rags completely in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>APE endured a miserable year as the token posted eight straight months of losses between February and September. The fall in interest and hype around Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs was the main reason for the price drop.<\/p>\n<p>Developers Yuga Labs and ApeCoin investors are counting on the success of the BAYC ecosystem&#8217;s gamified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/34708\/metaverse\">metaverse<\/a> called Otherside to spur APE coin prices higher. ApeCoin will be used as the native currency in Otherside.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Huobi Token (HT)<\/h3>\n<p>Huobi Global is a cryptocurrency exchange headed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/tron-trx\">Tron<\/a> (TRX) founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/justin-sun\">Justin Sun.<\/a> The exchange has a native token called Huobi token (HT), mainly used for customer rewards and discounts. As of 12 December 2023, HT had lost nearly 50% year-to-date due to hacks, regulatory troubles, and insolvency rumors about the crypto exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Back in March 2023, HT token flash-crashed over 90%, only to recover within minutes due to higher-than-average HT token sales triggered by leveraged liquidations. Later in May 2023, Huobi was ordered to cease operations and disable its website and applications by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sc.com.my\/resources\/media\/media-release\/sc-takes-enforcement-action-against-huobi-global-for-illegally-operating-dax-in-malaysia\" target=\"_blank\">regulatory authorities in Malaysia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Huobi&#8217;s year became even more turbulent as the exchange was accused of being an insolvency risk by popular crypto analyst Adam Cochran on X (formerly Twitter), which triggered HT token sales.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/16<\/p>\n<p>So why is Tether selling off?<\/p>\n<p>Likely Huobi insolvency.<\/p>\n<p>-Binance started selling off USDT in bulk.<br \/>-We found out that Huobi execs (and Tron personnel questioned by police)<br \/>-This is not long after Sun&#39;s stUSDT launch<br \/>-And weird balance shifts at Huobi in the last month <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/f3HViYS93a\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/f3HViYS93a<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Adam Cochran (adamscochran.eth) (@adamscochran) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamscochran\/status\/1687959096316542976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">August 5, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Troubles for Huobi continued as the crypto exchange was hacked for nearly $8 million in September 2023.<\/p>\n<h3>3. HEX<\/h3>\n<p>HEX is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/32571\/ethereum-cryptocurrency#:~:text=Techopedia%20Explains%20Ethereum&amp;text=The%20Ethereum%20foundation%20documents%20many,use%20and%20implementation%20of%20Ethereum.\">Ethereum<\/a>-based crypto designed to replicate the functions of a certificate of deposit or fixed deposits. HEX incentivizes holders to deposit and lock their tokens for more extended periods of time.<\/p>\n<p>The crypto project is marred with controversy. Many crypto community members have condemned HEX for marketing returns as high as 38%, while some have accused HEX of being a Ponzi scheme designed by founder Richard Heart.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2023, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/securities-and-exchange-commission-sec\">Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a> (SEC) charged Heart with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/press-release\/2023-143\" target=\"_blank\">misappropriating at least $12 million<\/a>. As of 12 December 2023, HEX has crashed nearly 75% YTD.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Dash (DASH)<\/h3>\n<p>Dash is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/bitcoin-fork\">Bitcoin fork<\/a> created in 2014. Its native cryptocurrency, DASH, currently sits at the 123rd rank in the largest cryptocurrencies by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/market-cap-market-capitalization\">market capitalization<\/a> as of 12 December 2023. The decade-old crypto could have placed higher if not for the six straight months of losses posted between March and August 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2023, DASH was identified by the U.S. SEC as a security and not a crypto. The SEC statement triggered the popular crypto exchange eToro to delist DASH from its platform.<\/p>\n<p>Technical issues further soured investor sentiment after the Dash blockchain <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SamWestrich\/status\/1660513873546596354?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">stalled and stopped producing blocks<\/a> momentarily following a network upgrade in May 2023.<\/p>\n<p>DASH token has recovered over 10% of its price in the last six months, as of 12 December 2023. Despite the rally, DASH is down 22% in YTD terms.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Secret Network (SCRT)<\/h3>\n<p>Privacy-focused Secret Network is a popular Cosmos-based layer one blockchain with a native cryptocurrency called SCRT. 2023 was a turbulent year for SCRT investors as the token exhibited wild price swings throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the high price volatility in SCRT can be traced to technical problems and internal conflicts. In late January 2023, Secret Network co-founder Guy Zyskind alleged that Secret Foundation&#8217;s founder Tor Bair <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.scrt.network\/t\/an-update-and-disclosure-concerning-secret-foundations-financial-transparency\/6762\" target=\"_blank\">sold foundation funds and pocketed some of the proceeds as a dividend payment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The internal turmoil resulted in several prominent network validators halting services and exiting the network.
