The dust is finally settling after a <\/span>turbulent few weeks for OpenAI<\/span><\/a>. As we attempt to unravel the chaos surrounding CEO Sam Altman’s off-and-on-again firing and rehiring, the situation’s complexity reveals many more facets.<\/span><\/p>\n According to Reuters, company r<\/span>esearchers wrote a foreboding letter to the board<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in a dramatic prelude<\/a> to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s temporary ouster. They “disclosed a groundbreaking AI discovery that they feared could be hazardous to humanity”.<\/span><\/p>\n This revelation, combined with the unverified project ‘Q*,’ known for its promising mathematical problem-solving abilities, allegedly played a pivotal role in the board’s decision to remove Altman. This was despite the looming threat of mass employee resignations supporting him.<\/span><\/p>\n The researchers’ cautionary note and concerns about the premature commercialization of such advancements underscored the intricate interplay of ethical considerations, technological innovations, and leadership dynamics at OpenAI, especially in their quest for <\/span>Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n AGI is at its early stages but is seen as an advanced form of AI designed to emulate human cognitive abilities, thus enabling it to undertake a broad spectrum of tasks that typically require human intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n Apprehensions about AGI arise from its potential to significantly impact society, encompassing ethical, social, and moral challenges and the risk of its exploitation by malevolent entities for unethical purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n In a\u00a0<\/span>blog post earlier this year<\/span><\/a>, Altman wrote that “because the upside of AGI is so great, we do not believe it is possible or desirable for society to stop its development forever. Instead, society and the developers of AGI have to figure out how to get it right.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n So, can it all go wrong?<\/span><\/p>\n The critical distinction between AI and AGI lies in their learning capabilities. Traditional AI learns through human-provided information, whereas AGI can independently seek new knowledge, recognize its knowledge gaps, and adjust its algorithms<\/a>\u00a0based on real-world discrepancies. Absent in current AI, this self-teaching ability represents a significant technological leap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Last year, Altman set off a few alarm bells on the\u00a0<\/span>Greymatter Podcast <\/span><\/a>when he compared his vision of AGI to a “median human” and how AI could do anything that a remote coworker is doing behind a computer \u2014 from learning how to be a doctor to learning how to go be a very competent coder. <\/span>A theme he repeated in September<\/span><\/a>\u00a0this year.<\/span><\/p>\n “For me, AGI is the equivalent of a median human that you could hire as a coworker.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n With its autonomous system and human-like reasoning, AGI promises to solve complex problems.
