As per the order, X had until about 8:00 p.m. local time to follow the orders or face a complete ban in the country. To avoid the ban, X would have to ban accounts as previously ordered by the Supreme Court and pay the due daily fines. X has yet to respond.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier this month, X\u2019s Global Government Affairs alleged in a post that its legal representative in the country had been pressured by Justice Moraes to comply with \u201ccensorship\u201d orders. It said the legal representative in the company was being threatened with arrest by the apex court if the company failed to implement legal orders to block certain accounts. The post went on to \u201cexpose his actions,\u201d sharing a \u201csecret order\u201d to permanently ban accounts without legal proceedings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last night, Alexandre de Moraes threatened our legal representative in Brazil with arrest if we do not comply with his censorship orders. He did so in a secret order, which we share here to expose his actions.<\/p>\n<p>Despite our numerous appeals to the Supreme Court not being heard,\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Pm2ovyydhE\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/Pm2ovyydhE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Global Government Affairs (@GlobalAffairs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GlobalAffairs\/status\/1824819053061669244?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">August 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the post noted X would continue to function in the country, even without local officials, its fate now hangs in the balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Musk had previously been at loggerheads with the Brazilian Supreme Court, and especially Justice Moraes, over topics of free speech and censorship. Back in April, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/news\/elon-musk-faces-brazil-investigation-over-refusal-to-ban-x-users\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Musk said he would defy the court\u2019s orders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to block X accounts of certain politicians and influencers over allegedly \u201canti-democratic\u201d activities. After declaring it was closing offices in Brazil, Musk went on to call Moraes \u201can utter disgrace to justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Due to demands by \u201cJustice\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexandre?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">@Alexandre<\/a> in Brazil that would require us to break (in secret) Brazilian, Argentinian, American and international law, \ud835\udd4f has no choice but to close our local operations in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>He is an utter disgrace to justice. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yAvX1TpuRp\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/t.co\/yAvX1TpuRp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1824839784852013125?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">August 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Notably, Moraes, who also heads the nation\u2019s electoral court, had ordered these accounts be blocked, citing they were peddling disinformation. The judge alleged this disinformation was the source of unrest in the country and tied it to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/01\/08\/bolsonaro-invade-congress-lula\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pillaging of various parliamentary buildings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including the presidential office, by supporters of the former far-right president in early 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moraes has since lodged a full-fledged attack on these alleged instances of disinformation. As part of his endeavors, the judge has ordered detention of offenders without trial and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.stf.jus.br\/noticias\/verNoticiaDetalhe.asp?idConteudo=485660&amp;ori=1\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sentenced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a congressman to roughly nine years in prison for criticizing the top court.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If X does not comply, it stands to lose over 20 million users in Brazil.
