It demanded that social media giant X ban the accounts of multiple far-right users.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to documents voluntarily disclosed to writer Michael Shellenberger, Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered X to take down the accounts while investigating ex-president Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s bid to hold power after his loss in the 2022 election.<\/p>\n<p>Musk objected to the order, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1776732561202696575\" target=\"_blank\">calling it<\/a> \u201caggressive censorship\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1776989005848207503\" target=\"_blank\">demanding<\/a> that the judge \u201cresign or be impeached.\u201d He vowed to reverse the bans and defy a restriction on publishing the blocked accounts\u2019 details, prompting Moraes\u2019 investigation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coming shortly, \ud835\udd4f will publish everything demanded by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexandre?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">@Alexandre<\/a> and how those requests violate Brazilian law. <\/p>\n<p>This judge has brazenly and repeatedly betrayed the constitution and people of Brazil. This campaign seeks to uncover alleged scandals on social networks by publishing internal information.<\/p>\n<p>The bans came after pro-Bolsonaro \u201cdigital militias\u201d marched into government buildings in Brazil\u2019s capital city of Brasilia on January 8th, 2023. The move was characterized as a would-be coup to restore Bolsonaro after he lost to Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva.<\/p>\n<p>Musk has frequently positioned himself as a champion of free speech. He has overturned bans on numerous prominent X users, including former US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/news\/midjourney-blocks-biden-and-trump-images-generation-ahead-of-election\">Donald Trump<\/a> and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The Brazilian government, however, argued that the tech executive was breaking the law and threatening officials.<\/p>\n<p>The X CEO was aware of the potential consequences. He <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1776739518240170254\" target=\"_blank\">believed<\/a> the company would \u201cprobably\u201d have to close its Brazil office and lose revenue from the country. He further <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1777089879295631409\" target=\"_blank\">recommended<\/a> that Brazilians use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/vpn\/vpn-pros-and-cons\">VPN<\/a> to keep using X even if it is unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>A withdrawal from Brazil is unlikely to affect Elon Musk significantly. He\u2019s currently considered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/elon-musk-net-worth\">richest person in the world<\/a>, with a net worth of $230.2 billion as of January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>However, the move could amplify X\u2019s ongoing financial troubles.
