Dot pitch is a term for the distance between individual pixels in a visual display technology. It is calculated by measuring the closeness of individual pixels to one another. A display with a lower dot pitch will generally have higher image quality.

Dot pitch is measured in fractions of a millimeter. Common dot pitch ranges for LCD screens and monitors are around .20 – .28 millimeters. Experts point out that there are different ways to measure dot pitch. For example, the difference between a diagonal dot pitch, which measures pixel-to-pixel distance diagonally, and a horizontal dot pitch, which measures horizontally, can cause confusion about relative measurements. Also, some displays may use differently shaped pixels or different display technologies, which can affect relative dot pitch calculations.

Dot pitch is only one of several considerations for determining image quality on a device. Users will also have to consider the input media used to generate the images, along with other aspects of display design.
