Google then uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/8181\/machine-learning-ml\">machine learning<\/a> algorithms to assign individual browsers to a cohort. FLoC periodically looks at the browser&#39;s history to see if a user&#39;s web habits have changed and adjusts cohort assignments accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Google is working to phase out its use of third-party cookies as part of the company&rsquo;s promise to improve user privacy. (Safari and Firefox have already blocked third-party cookies by default.) Microsoft Edge, which is Chromium-based, is taking a wait-and-see approach while still continuing to work on a <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/marketing\/inflection-point-microsofts-gm-of-global-advertising-business-on-privacy-ad-business-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\">similar strategy called PARAKEET<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"how_to_opt_out_of_google_chrome_floc\">How to Opt Out of Google Chrome FLoC<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google&#39;s FLoC canary rollout is also controversial because the company has said it does not intend to apply the concept of cohorts to Google owned-and-operated properties.
