Drawing exchange format (DXF) is a file format for graphics information. It is an ASME/ANSI standard that is used for PC-based CAD/CAM platforms. DXF enables vector data exchange as well as 2D and 3D graphics drawing.

DXF is similar to initial graphics exchange specification (IGES) and it uses a vector data file format. One drawback of DXF is that it does not typically provide enough information to permit interoperability between and with other programs.

DXF not only has the capabilities for storing geometry elements, it also holds design properties such as line width and line style. Geometric data can be displayed by layer.
