Quiet, please… Wimbledon 2024 is in play.
The oldest tennis tournament in the world is serving up the action and Techopedia is crunching the numbers and Wimbledon facts.
It all started in 1877, when 200 spectators watched Spencer Gore win the trophy at the inaugural Wimbledon Championships.
This year, more than 55 million people will tune in for a volley of grunts, a forehand of close calls, and a generous helping of Wimbledon strawberries and cream.
It’s the most iconic lawn tennis tournament in the world, from the country where it all began. The ball boys and girls earn about $250 for a week’s work. The men’s and women’s champions will each pocket a first prize worth a cool $3.4 million.
That’s an ace serving. Anyone for tennis?
Wimbledon Strawberries & Cream
Did you know that nearly two million strawberries will be munched at Wimbledon this year?
The strawberries come from a farm in Kent, just 31 miles away. Accompanying them will be more than 7,000 liters of heavy cream.
Strawberries have always been associated with the tournament, for obvious reasons. July is the month of the perfect strawberry. Add a little cream and it’s summer on a plate.
Today, strawberries are refrigerated. In 19th century London, the strawberry season lasted only a few weeks; it was a feast of fruit and forehand smashes.
Strawberries and cream are such a traditional fixture at Wimbledon that organizers have opted to keep the price low, frozen for 13 years at £2.50 (just over three dollars) a punnet.
Inflation busting stuff, when you consider a single glass of Champagne will cost you £25.50 ($33) this year.
Wimbledon Centre Court
When it comes to the perfect combination of tradition and excellence, few tennis courts can rival Centre Court at Wimbledon.
There’s a royal box, an ivy coated exterior, and a pristine grass surface that sees action for only two weeks a year.
It’s been the scene of some of the most iconic moments in tennis: Borg and McEnroe, Federer against Nadal, Venus vs Williams. Centre Court has seen it all; including an impromptu concert from Cliff Richard.
Over the years, Wimbledon’s Centre Court capacity has increased to 15,000; making it the largest grass court stadium in the world.
If you want to catch a game, prepare to dig deep. You can get a Centre Court ticket only via a public ballot or by queuing on the day.
Tickets to the final re-sell for more than $15,000 a seat; more than 165 times their face value.
How Many Tennis Balls Are Used at Wimbledon?
One of the best souvenirs you can take away from Wimbledon is a used tennis ball.
The tournament gets through approximately 55,000 balls every year. Once played, they are sold to raise money for the Wimbledon Foundation.
The tennis balls at Wimbledon are supplied by the Dunlop Slazenger Group. They are chilled at around 68°F to ensure consistent performance.
‘New balls’ are requested by the umpire, after the first seven games and then every nine games thereafter.
