After adding support for the first-gen Nest Cam Indoor and Nest Cam Outdoor last year, Google is now adding support for the first-gen wired Nest Doorbell (formerly known as Nest Hello) to the Google Home app.
If you’re a Nest Hello user, there’s good news for you — Google is expanding device support for the Google Home app to include the original wired Nest Doorbell. This feature is currently in public preview, but don’t worry; it’s likely to be released to everyone unless any major issues arise.
If you want to try it out now, you can enroll in the Public Preview in the Google Home app. Once enrolled, go to the Favorites tab in the Google Home app to view the instructions on moving your Nest Doorbell from the Nest app to the Public Preview.
After you’ve made the transfer, you’ll be able to manage your Nest Doorbell alongside other devices in the Google Home app. You’ll also get access to some new features, including an updated camera history experience. Plus, you’ll be able to quickly switch between timeline and event list views to check your history.
Google Home’s garage door detection is now available to all Nest Aware subscribers
The garage door detection feature, which was introduced in the Google Home Public Preview last fall, is now accessible to all Nest Aware subscribers. This feature uses advanced AI technology to detect if your garage door is left open and send you a notification.
The best part is that it doesn’t require any extra hardware. You simply need to set up your Nest cam in such a way that it has clear sight of your garage door (check out how to set up garage door detection).
After the set-up is complete, you’ll get a notification whenever your garage door opens, closes, or stays open too long—a duration you can customize. However, there are two things to know. First, this feature is currently only available in the US and Canada. Second, you need a Nest Aware subscription ($8/month or $80/year) and a Nest Cam (indoor, wired, 2nd generation) or a Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery) connected to a wired power supply.
In addition to these announcements, Google’s blog post also mentioned that the team is actively working to bring support for more Nest devices into the Home app. So, you might see more news about making the Home app compatible with more Nest devices in the coming days.
