There’s nothing more exciting in the world of gaming than the announcement of a new console.
However, as the generations have gotten longer, these tend to only come about every 8 to 10 years, which has led to many console manufacturers revising their systems with minor upgrades and design changes partway through the generation.
A leak earlier in 2024 revealed that Xbox planned two new Xbox Series X and S revisions. One was codenamed Project Brooklin and the other Elwood.
It turns out that Xbox had bigger plans than just that. During the Xbox Games Showcase, where we saw some of the most exciting upcoming Xbox games for 2024 and 2025, we also learned about three new Xbox Series X/S systems.
Comparing three Xbox consoles against one another isn’t as easy as pitting the PS5 vs. the Xbox Series X. I’ll run down all the differences in price, power, and design so you can decide which one is right for you.
What Are the New Xbox Consoles for 2024?
The three new Xbox Series X/S consoles coming in 2024 are the:
- Xbox Series S – 1TB
- Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition
- Xbox Series X – 2TB
These systems are new iterations on the existing Xbox Series X and S models, not mid-generation upgrades or next-generation systems.
The Xbox Series X – 2TB does come in a unique Galaxy Black color that has not been offered before.

Which Xbox Has the Best Performance?
Of all three new Xbox consoles, the Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition and Xbox Series X – 2TB editions have the best performance. Both of these consoles have the same level of power as the base Series X, while the Xbox Series S – 1TB only has the power of the current Series S.
The only upgrade you’re getting between the current Series X/S models and these new ones is increased storage space. The Xbox Series S – 1TB and Xbox Series X – 2TB have double the storage space of the base versions.
The Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition does not have more storage than the base Series X, but is slightly cheaper and has no disk drive.
Which Xbox Has the Best Design?
Design is a matter of taste, and you may not even see your console very often depending on your setup. However, this is a chance to get an Xbox in a new color.
The Xbox Series S – 1TB comes in Robot White, which was already an option. It retains its much smaller, rectangular design with the large black circle standing out against the white.
The All-Digital Series X is the first time you have the option to get the X model in white rather than black. Unlike the Brooklin leaks, it isn’t a cylindrical design and is still the same cubic form factor as the original.
Finally, the Xbox Series X – 2TB version comes in a brand-new color called Galaxy Black. Instead of a pure black like the normal model, this design speckles in green and grey dots all along the exterior to give it a more interstellar vibe.
I would recommend deciding based on the specs more than looks, but personally enjoy the clean appearance of either Robot White system.
Which Xbox is Right For Me?
These three consoles are different enough that knowing which one is best for you shouldn’t be too hard.
If you don’t need or want the most powerful console and want to save a bit of money, the Xbox Series S – 1TB is the cheapest option. Just make sure you’re okay with playing your games digitally because it does not have a disc drive.
For those who want to play games at the highest possible performance settings but don’t need a disc drive, the Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition is a great middle ground. It has the exact same parts under the hood as the Series X but is a bit cheaper since it strips out the disc drive.
Last up, the Xbox Series X – 2TB is for the most hardcore Xbox gamer. This system keeps the disc drive but doubles the storage space to 2TB so you can keep twice as many games installed and ready to play. That storage isn’t cheap, however, so you will need to pay extra.
Should I Buy an Xbox Today, or Wait?
If you don’t already have an Xbox or PS5, there’s no danger in buying any of these new Xbox consoles when they come out this holiday. The current generation began in 2020, meaning we’re about halfway through what we expect this generation’s expected lifespan. If you want to wait for the next generation to start, you’ll need to be very patient.
If you already have an Xbox, the only reason I would suggest purchasing a new console is if you’re upgrading from the S to an X.
If you have an X, the only benefit you could be getting is more storage; however, you can already expand your storage yourself without buying an entirely new system.
