The AI video generation market is one of the fastest-moving areas of artificial intelligence development today.
The most hyped text-to-video model, OpenAI’s Sora, has yet to be given a primetime debut but is seen by many as the video generation model to beat.
A number of potential challengers to the crown have emerged in 2024, including Haiper AI, which launched with $13.8 million in seed funding in March 2024.
Haiper provides a free video generation tool that uses deep learning and machine learning to generate videos on demand. Users can either enter a written prompt or upload a PNG or JPEG image.
Users own the intellectual property rights to content created with Haiper, which gives them the freedom to use it however they see fit.
Where Haiper AI Stands in the AI Video Generation Race
Since its release, Haiper has attracted considerable attention due to its model’s ability to create highly realistic content.
The organization’s solution is produced and maintained by an experienced team featuring leading machine learning talent from Google DeepMind and TikTok, including Haiper co-founder and CEO Dr Yishu Miao.
While videos created with Haiper are limited to a few seconds in length, they are capable of replicating realistic motion and can convincingly animate still images.
Although the Haiper platform is free, it does come with some base limitations. Most notably, you need to sign up for Haiper Membership to produce unlimited creations, create watermark-free videos, develop private creations, or to use your content for commercial use.
In the market context, Haiper AI is competing against Sora, Google Veo, and Runway Gen-3 Alpha.
How Haiper AI Stacks Up Against Sora
When it comes to image quality, Haiper AI’s outputs are extremely detailed but don’t quite match the level of photorealism offered by Sora’s initial promotional examples.
For example, we didn’t find anything we felt matched the level of detail offered by the photo-realistic depictions of the Lady in Red walking or a snowy Tokyo city.

Some of the best examples of Haiper we found, such as the Technological Singularity and the Mechanical cat police clips (below), were highly detailed in their own right but more noticeably more cartoony than Sora’s. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it is a noticeable stylistic difference.

That said, it’s important to note that Sora isn’t out yet, so it’s not necessarily fair to compare it to a released product like Haiper.
Meanwhile, OpenAI may find itself in a future brewing storm with speculation and allegations that Sora has been trained on copyrighted material from YouTube.
So, considering these factors, Haiper stacks up well against Sora, simply because it has a model out of the door that produces high-quality content and, from where we stand, no sense of controversy.
Our Verdict: Haiper vs Sora
Based on the quality of images created by Haiper and our experience testing the tool so far, we think that Haiper has the potential to be a viable competitor in the future against Sora.
Although there are ways to go before reaching the level of photorealistic content that Sora or Veo’s early demos have produced, the cartoon-style generation is on par with other video generation tools on the market right now.
The Bottom Line
Harper AI is an exciting wild card to watch in the AI video generation market, but it’s unlikely to unseat Sora as the golden child anytime soon.
As of today, it is an excellent free tool for anyone who wants to experiment with AI-driven video creation.
