What is the Google Pixel 9?

Google Pixel 9 is the next Google flagship smartphone series, replacing the Google Pixel 8 lineup as the best Google Pixel phone.

The range begins with the base Pixel 9 model starting at $799, reaching up to $1,799 for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (or the “Fold 2”).

Overall, the new Pixel releases bring Google neck-and-neck with Samsung in competition for the best Android phone manufacturer.

Google Pixel 9 Release Date

Release Date: August 22, 2024

The Google Pixel 9 range goes on general release on August 22, 2024.

The series was rumored for a year and then confirmed by Google during its annual Made By Google event on August 13.

Note that the Fold 2 is expected to arrive in shops a few weeks later, on September 4, 2024.

The smartphones will be available worldwide.

Google Pixel 9 Features & Hands-On

Starting with the Pixel 9, owners have an AI-enabled, Tensor 4-running smartphone with a 6.3 inch display protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. and 12GB of RAM.

Move up to the Pro for a bump to 16GB of RAM and up to the Pro XL for a 6.8 inch display.

All models have a rounded camera bump and a fast ‘ultrasonic’ fingerprint reader, which, in our hands-on testing, eliminated users’ gripes with previous models.

You can also use generative AI via Pixel Studio to create images from prompts.

In our opinion, this is a strong and mature smartphone line-up from Google.

The Pixel range has a strong reputation already, but from fixes to the fingerprint scanner to top-of-the-range hardware and prices that don’t seek to gouge the buyer, these are easy recommendations and may tempt some of the Samsung faithful.

The Pro Fold addresses complaints that most first-generation devices attract, in particular, a nearly non-existent crease, a powerful processor, and nips and tucks that make the screen a pleasure to use.
