Retailer images obtained by Android Headlines reportedly show the Google Pixel 8a receiving a seven-year security update policy like its higher-end counterparts.
It’s not clear if the Pixel 8a update strategy applies to the OS as well, as it does on the 8 and 8 Pro. However, this still suggests the mid-range phone will likely remain secure for its practical lifespan.
The Pixel 7a is slated to get three years of OS updates and five years of security patches.
The store’s graphics also suggest the Pixel 8a will deliver a similar AI feature set. You’ll get Best Take group portraits, Circle to Search, and email summaries. You may have to wait to get the complete collection, though, as the marketing material notes the Pixel 8a will get Call Assist screening through an update in the summer.
The leak also shows expected details, such as the Tensor G3 chip from the Pixel 8 series as well as four colors (Bay, Mint, Obsidian, and Porcelain). Earlier leaks pointed to a 6.1-inch, 120Hz 1080p display as well as the same 64MP primary camera as on the 7a. You’d also get 13MP ultra-wide and selfie cameras.

A corresponding image leak from Evan Blass has shown the Pixel 8a in all four colors.
Android Headlines claimed the Pixel 8a would go on sale May 16th, or two days after a debut at the Google I/O conference on May 14th. We wouldn’t rule out a different date, though. The Pixel 7a went on sale the same day it premiered.
The Pixel 8a isn’t expected to cost significantly more than the 7a, which originally sold for $499. It could also be available in more countries, particularly in Europe. If so, it could represent a viable option for buyers who previously had few major choices for major mid-tier phones.
The most obvious competitor, Samsung’s Galaxy A55, has a larger (but similar resolution) 120Hz display. It has a 5MP macro camera and a 32MP front cam, but lower-resolution main (50MP) and ultra-wide (12MP) shooters. Its Exynos 1480 chip isn’t certain to provide a performance edge over the Pixel 8a.
