What is the WSOP?
WSOP stands for the World Series of Poker. It’s been running since 1970 and is held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada. For most, it’s the pinnacle of the game, and each tournament presents a gold bracelet to the winner, which is regarded as one of the highest honors. There are millions of dollars to play for across dozens of tournaments every year, but the prestige of winning and being engraved into poker history far outweighs the monetary rewards for most.
The online series is an extension of the live game, with this year’s online edition taking place in June and July. Even though WSOP Online has only been running since 2020, because of the history surrounding the WSOP brand, it’s now the biggest and most lucrative online poker series in the world.
How Does the WSOP Online Work?
The series takes place online over a 7-week period. In total, there are 30 tournaments that NV/NJ/MI players can enter, with varying buy-ins, starting as low as $333 up to $10,000. Pennsylvania players will have seven bracelet events ranging from $333 to $600 buy-ins.
Games are diverse and include Texas Hold’em and Omaha variants. To mix it up, each game changes in terms of the rules. These might include different starting stacks, varied level timers, players at the table, speed of the blinds, and bounties.
Players are permitted to enter as many of the events as they wish, but most will pick and choose games that suit them in terms of ability and bankroll. Some professional players will train all year to have the funds and the ability to play in all 30 events.
There is a catch, however.
Restrictions for online poker in the United States mean they are limited in terms of players they can play against based on location. They must be physically located in any one of the four eligible states in order to play.
Players in the US can access games on the official WSOP online poker site. It is still not as convenient as playing on the best US online poker sites.
Winners of each tournament will still win a bracelet each, which for most, is what the WSOP is all about.
How to Enter WSOP Online
Being an online event, the WSOP registration process is incredibly simple. If you’ve got an account and you’ve enough money in your account to buy in, you’re good to go. However, we’ve outlined the whole process below in an easy-to-use step-by-step guide.
1) Download the WSOP App
Head to the WSOP site and download the app. You’ve got the choice of downloading via your mobile/tablet or desktop/Mac.
2) Create an Account
You can do this on the website prior to downloading the app or via the app, whichever is easiest. The process should take just a few minutes, but it’s worth noting that only players in Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
3) Open the WSOP Site
Open the poker client and log in. You will need to fund your account, which you can do so via the cashier.
4) Find the “Tournament” Tab
Within the poker client, find the “All Games” tab and then choose the “Tournament” tab. This will open all the tournaments that are live. Click on “Special” to see the full range of WSOP online games.
5) Choose Your Game and Register
Double-click on the tournament, and this will bring up the lobby for that game. Click on the “Register” button to enter. If you decide that you don’t want to play, you can click on “Unregister,” and your entry fee will instantly be refunded.
How to Satellite into WSOP for Free/Cheap
One of the best ways to get entry into WSOP Online is to satellite in. These are smaller tournaments that are set up, and if you win, you get a seat at the main events.
The best way to find satellites you can enter is from the main poker lobby on WSOP Play Online. If you search for the tournament you want to play and then open the lobby for that specific event, there will be a section at the bottom that shows all the live satellites you can enter.
Across the site will be a host of different tournaments with ranging buy-ins and seats available. The higher the buy-in, the more seats there will be up for grabs.
Buy-ins for these events can range from freerolls with free WSOP chips up to several hundreds of dollars. WSOP will host the guaranteed 25-seat Main Event mega-satellites on June 30 and July 3. If you want to get access to main events for cheap or even for free, then this is the way to go.
WSOP Tournament Types
One of the best things about the WSOP circuit is the range of tournaments it offers. With a total of 37 bracelets on WSOP Online, it creates a diverse mix of games (limited to Texas Hold’em and Omaha base games), buy-ins, and prizemoney.
The WSOP app has entry fees that start from $333 Triple Treys No Limit Hold’em event and range up to the new $10,000 WSOP Online Championship on July 11. Interestingly, there are only $3,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools, but prizemoney from previous years has hit millions of dollars for most.
Texas Hold’em
Texas Hold’em is the most prominent game type and is covered in depth across both sites. Given that it’s the most popular poker format, it’s not surprising to see how many games there are, but in a bid to keep each different, they have varying rules.
Some of the Hold’em variants include:
- Bounties
- No limit
- Monster Stacks
- Mystery Bounties
- 6-handed
- Ultra Deepstack
- Re-buys
- Lucky 7’s
- Crazy 8’s
- PKO
- Freezeout
- Multi-flight Colossus
Omaha
Omaha games are limited across the two sites but are still accessible. These games can be some of the more entertaining as it often gets players playing who aren’t as strong as mixed games as they are Texas Hold’em, meaning competent WSOP players have a notable skill advantage.
Some of the Omaha variants include:
- Mystery Bounty 6-Max
- 6-Max Championship
