The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was responsible for building a packet-switching network called ARPANET that much of the roots of the Internet can be traced back to. In 1972, the name of the departnment changed to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and so many assume that the name of the network also changed to DARPANET.
