What Does Spam Over Internet Telephony Mean?
Spam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) refers to the undesired, automated, pre-recorded, bulk telephone calls made using the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). SPIT is almost like email spam, but causes even more disturbance to victims given that the spam is in the form of a phone call.
This term is also known as VOIP spam.
Techopedia Explains Spam Over Internet Telephony
VoIP platforms are vulnerable to unsolicited SPIT from telemarketers, system abusers and pranksters. Like privacy options set by chat software and email systems, VOIP systems can also make use of similar measures to prevent SPIT. Some countermeasures include:
- Employing device fingerprinting to find information on the caller.
- Maintaining white, black and grey lists helps to identify the caller.
- Implementing turing tests or computational puzzles.
