While you may be enjoying Fortnite’s new season, we’ve been considering where it stands. And where each stands in an overall ranking of the best Fortnite seasons.
We could consider the best Fortnite chapters, but given the strong response to individual chapters from the fanbase, let’s throw our hat in the ring and go through every last one.
As any player of the game will know, Fortnite seasons bring a fresh theme and novel content, so there’s plenty to consider when ranking the best. We’ll do that below and provide additional info on Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix.
Key Takeaways
- Epic Games’ work across 32 seasons is incredible.
- Older seasons are sometimes viewed with rose-tinted specs.
- Some of the best Fortnite collabs have been superhero-themed.
- Primal, Wilds, and Vibin’ cannot catch a break.
- Who can argue with Fortnite OG?
Best Fortnite Seasons Ever
31. Chapter 2 Season 6 – Primal
Okay, Primal. Yes, you introduced the bow and a range of critters to trample around the map, which was cute. But what was with the loot pool and weapons? Underpowered makeshift additions that were roundly disliked (we’re sure some people did like them). But we’re not arguing with the mass sentiment. Not good; we’re putting it as the worst of the Fortnite updates.
30. Chapter 4 Season 3 – Wilds
Another Fortnite season where the loot pool was just ‘huh’? Sure, boomerang, mud, Optimus Primal, but it was all really kind of forgettable. Raptors and a jungle that weren’t implemented in a particularly fun way to get in/out of are also on the list. As one comment we’ve seen puts it, “This was a season that existed.”
29. Chapter 3 Season 3 – Vibin’
The irony of a season name for Vibin’ is strong. We’re not; it’s Fortnite. This isn’t the game for taking it easy. Is it one of the best Fortnite seasons? Nope, there was about as much to do as a trip to the laundromat. And if that sounds unfair, we’ll be generous and say it was strong in theory but not in execution. Darth Vader and Indiana Jones appeared, but the story ultimately went nowhere.
28. Chapter 5 Season 3 – Wrecked
An excellent concept, but players were able to be car-ried (not sorry) in vehicles, meaning that anyone outside of them was almost assured an L, and because of it, the dynamic of Fortnite changed completely. Vehicle counters were added, the solid Wastelander Challenges came in, and nitro weapons also appeared this season. But not a high point for Fortnite Chapter 5, nor Fortnite seasons in general.
27. Chapter 2 Season 1 – New World
After the two-day black hole event that shook the Fortnite fanbase to its core, what emerged was Fortnite’s Chapter 2 Season 1 – A New World. A new map, with fishing, swimming, and even boats appeared. The Battle Pass wasn’t up to much, alas, though Ripley vs Sludge was a bright spark for Fortnite skins. The season went on and on, though, not in a good way.
26. Chapter 1 Season X – Out of Time
We don’t think there’s much to disagree on here. Maybe you enjoyed Season X, but upgraded skins from Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 9, an otherwise lacking battle pass, and just a general view of ‘what is this?’ permeates this season. Perhaps too much was being done ahead of A New World, too many changes, but not enough in this season to enjoy for it to be higher in the Fortnite ranks. A missed opportunity, but the focus was perhaps beyond it.
25. Chapter 5 Season 2 – Myths & Mortals
If Season X did too little in terms of content, Fortnite’s Chapter 5 Season 2 tried to do far too much. The theme was a great idea, but ultimately things felt crowded with the collabs interfering in godly matters. First, there was the Avatar event, and then there was Star Wars. Two huge IPs, in one season, that had a promising theme of its own. This season also brought Waterbending, which itself is divisive.
24. Chapter 3 Season 4 – Paradise
The final season of an oddly short and less memorable chapter of the game. The addition of the ‘Chrome’ substance felt somewhat ‘meh’, but the Battle Pass offered up some interesting things: The Paradigm/Brie Larsson, Spider-Gwen, Wild Beary Grizz, and Meow Skulls Fortnite Skins. Plus, some the Fortnitemares event and some cool cosmetics were made available.
23. Chapter 1 Season 1 – First Steps
Yes, we’re putting the first Fortnite season ever at 24. It is the original arrival that provided the foundations for a game now loved by many, many millions. But the love for the original season feels nostalgia-led. This 46-day ‘season’ would be unrecognizable today (no battle pass even), and we can’t rank it higher based on what the game became. Yes, you did well, dear ancestor, but time has moved on.
22. Chapter 1 Season 9 – The Future Is Yours
This season had very interesting map changes thanks to The Unvaulting, heralding the arrival of Neo Tilted and Mega Mall. Chapter 1 is often considered one of the best Fortnite chapters, and this season is good, but not among the top ones to emerge from Chapter 1. Nonetheless, the hype was strong.
21. Chapter 3 Season 2 – Resistance
A Fortnite season themed around war, with hugely unfortunate timing resonating in Europe around its release. The season did offer strong collaborations, with The Prowler and Doctor Strange, an enjoyable Collision Seasonal Event, and Zero build. It was fun, chaotic, and well-delivered, although the map changes felt uninspired.
20. Chapter 5 Season 4 – Absolute Doom
There are good and bad points for this season. A Marvel collab felt the stuff of Fortnite gold, but equally, Marvel-inspired loot and mythics failed to boom and were largely divisive. For many, the overwhelming amount and underwhelming quality of Marvel’s content was a controller-downer, and there was no continuity with Nexus War. The story? Not a showstopper.
19. Chapter 4 Season 1 – A New Beginning
The Shockwave Hammer season – we’re only semi-serious – saw this item in and out of the vault. But plenty was going on both in front of and behind the Fortnite curtain. The game switched to Unreal Engine 5.1, and many believe this to be one of the best Fortnite seasons when it comes to visuals. Add POIs, very nicely designed structures, mantling, and Reality Augments, and there was lots to like.
18. Chapter 2 Season 3 – Splashdown
Bringing a map flood, loot sharks, Aquaman Challenges, and a wholly immersive oceanic element to Chapter 2, as Fortnite updates go, this was a very strong one. The battle pass offered good variety, and the season felt cohesive. Perhaps this helped because it was the shortest season of Chapter 2. Good things often go by quickly.
17. Chapter 5 Season 1 – Underground
Fortnite Chapter 5 got off to a solid start with an enjoyable map in Season 1, mixing interesting POIs and biomes. A fairly well-balanced loot pool and battle pass were layered on top, and this season added the weapon mod feature and other innovations. The theme was dry though, which holds it back from ranking much higher.
16. Chapter 3 Season 1 – Flipped
The season that literally flipped Fortnite on its head, well, the map, at least. A compelling combination of content and additions, as this season brought with it a completely new map that was well-liked, a third being snow-covered, and the Spiderman collab and web-slinger item. A new slide mechanic arrived, along with new quest types and weather effects. A comprehensively solid season, this one.
15. Chapter 2 Season 8 – Fortnite Cubed
There’s a lot of hate for Cubed, but the story was strong, and the theme was solid throughout. The Imposters game mode feels overlooked now but was largely enjoyed, and the storyline propelled well into Chapter 3. The season offered up simple but effective things like Carnage and enjoyable Carnage and Veno mythics, while Fabio Sparklemane is a …niche taste, perhaps. Sneaks into the top 15, but it isn’t one of the strongest seasons overall.
14. Chapter 2 Season 7 – Invasion
We had a simple theme done well arrived in Invasion, with Fortnite being invaded by aliens and UFOs offering out-of-this-world enjoyment. Let’s not forget that a balanced and fun season can do wonders, and this was one of those. Alien environments, a progression to the story, and the arrival of Superman all add to the bonus points on this one. Not one of the greatest seasons from the Fortnite chapters so far, but good nonetheless and enjoyable weaponry in rail and ray guns.
13. Chapter 1 Season 6 – Darkness Rises
Fortnitemares arrived, as did zombies and a dark take on the map in the first Hallowe’en backdropped season in Fortnite’s history. Chapter 1 may be regarded as the best Fortnite Chapter ever, and some of that may be rose-tinted. Many OG players agree that Season 6 did bring a lot of chaos and enjoyment but perhaps overdid the undead chasing after players thing.
12. Chapter 1 Season 5 – Worlds Collide
Another Chapter 1 season in the top 15 Fortnite seasons, and we’re trying to not let Fortnite’s fun, youthful years rule too much. But worlds did collide, and spacetime did rift, and it was largely regarded as a LOT of fun. Intriguing map changes augmented this, such as the arrival of a desert biome where Moisty Mire had been. Also, the arrival of The Cube was genuinely compelling.
11. Chapter 2 Season 5 – Zero Point
The floor was lava in Zero Point, but players could jet-pack their way out of that somewhat. Still, somewhere around 15 collabs in one season in The Omniverse meant utter, utter variety, and who would have thought Tron and Daryl Dixon or Chun-Li and Michonne would appear in the same season? Also Kratos, The Mandalorian, The Flash, Master Chief, Ellen Ripley, and many more. Wow.
10. Chapter 4 Season 2 – MEGA
MEGA gets into the top 10 Fortnite seasons, because of a compelling theme and the rifted-in Mega City. Plus, while cyberpunk themes aren’t for everyone, offering a split experience for players is something few fast-paced games attempt and even fewer deliver. Bored of the city? Steamy Springs was the antidote. The battle pass was stylish and varied, and the season delivered a contiguous whole of content, plus rail grinds and drifting.
9. Chapter 1 Season 8 – X Marks the Spot
Now well inside the 10 best Fortnite seasons, Season 8 offered up a pirate-strewn landscape, separating from Season 7’s Wintry theme. A range of biomes, a volcano, desert, jungle, and ice meant variety too. A truly fun theme was backed by the arrival of Peely, Lux, and ‘the floor is lava’ game mode that would return in Chapter 2 Season 5. Good ol’ fun me mateys.
8. Chapter 2 Season 2 – Top Secret
Fortnite did spies in this season, but there was an additional secret awaiting. Deadpool! Before other Marvel collaborations! Yes, this season may be one of the memorable and best, hailing from Fortnite Chapter 2, where momentum was beginning to be had. There were big shifts in the map and in the features for Top Secret, not to mention one of the best Fortnite live events, the engaging The Device event.
7. Chapter 1 Season 7 – You Better Watch Out
Season 8 was a great departure from a great prior season. Season 7 offered up a wintry wonderland, as planes and zip-lines zipped up the battle speed across Dec ’18 to Feb’19. The Battle Pass may be considered ‘mid’, but the arrival of Lynx was a point in time for many, and snowy areas were truly new in the game. Fortnite felt fresh and a bit chilly.
6. Chapter 4 Season 4 – Last Resort
A divisive one, perhaps, Last Resort was another fully considered and impressive update, heavy in continuity as the takedown of Thorne (vampiric during the Fortnitemares period) was at the core of this update. The battle pass was largely overlooked by many, but the season included a box full of gadgets and guns, including the not-very stealthy rocket ram. Ultimately the heist theme was strong, and this season gets a lot less love than it should.
5. Chapter 1 Season 4 – Brace for Impact
Ultimately game-changing, this season was the first with an in-game event (the Rocket Event). The huge comet, the villain’s lair, the superhero theme, the excellent battle pass with Omega and Carbide superhero skins, the Infinity Gauntlet (hello Thanos!), the jet pack, and much more. It’s hard not to rate Season 4 as one of the very best, given its freshness and willingness to leap head-first into it. So we won’t fight it; welcome to the top five.
4. Chapter 2 Season 4 – Nexus War
Okay, we’ve put two superhero-themed updates next to each other. But they work so well in Fortnite. Another season 4 win, this time from Chapter 2, the Devourer of Worlds event and renewed relationship with the Marvel collab saw a shedload of wantable skins from some of the world’s favorite superheroes. Galactus, the Avengers, Helicarrier, Stark, everything. Wonderful.
3. Chapter 1 Season 2 – Medieval Fortnite
Still in its infancy, Fortnite, but with knights season, is still a smashing idea and hugely, fondly remembered. Again, this is a while ago, and we’re trying not to be nostalgic, but the second season genuinely kicked Fortnite into a higher gear. The map started to transform, the battle pass took shape, small but important QoL changes began, and the grenade launcher, boogie bomb, and cozy campfires arrived. Heady times!
2. Chapter 1 Season 3 – Peak Fortnite
Almost peak Fortnite on this list; Season 3 was another strong step after the success of Season 2. Delivering a ‘John Wick’ skin and the first ever 100-tier battle pass, there’s a reason that it features in many fans’ top 10, top 5, or top 2 best Fortnite seasons lists. Tilted towers arrived, and at this point, Fortnite was doing things no other game had ever done, lining up story arcs and any number of possibilities for what would come afterward. Nostalgic, yes, but iconic? Definitely.
1. Chapter 4 Season OG – Fortnite: OG
What do you give the Battle Royale that has everything? A revisiting of its younger self, but made exceptional. The success of Fortnite: OG is a testament to where the game has been and where it is now, reminding players of the game’s incredible development and ongoing legacy. The return of Season 4’s map and iconic areas like Athena Island, added to record player numbers, say all there is to say about why this is number one.
New Fortnite Season: Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix
The newest Fortnite season, Chapter 2 Remix, is yet to be on this list. However, if it’s to be anywhere near the success of OG, you can expect it to build its way directly towards the top of our rankings.
The 32nd season of Fortnite revisits the first seasons of Chapter 2, delivering ten new Fortnite skins, new weapons, emotes, and a new ‘kicks’ item, the first of which is Air Jordans.
This is alongside new loading screens, a unique ‘contrail’ flair for dropping into Battle Royale mode, back bling, gliders, and just an other-worldly amount of things to enjoy. All of this can be enjoyed while revisiting the Chapter 2 Season 2 map, so you can have new joy and nostalgic joy all rolled into one.
The Bottom Line
At 32 seasons, Fortnite’s impressive longevity, creativity, and ongoing love for engaging its fanbase is the real winner. However, in our view, and you may well disagree. Fortnite OG reins supreme, for now.
