Google has announced an uncharacteristically early August 13th hardware event where it’s expected to introduce Pixel 9 series phones and the Pixel Watch 3.
The Made By Google presentation will take place at the company’s Mountain View, California headquarters at 1PM Eastern. The company has teased news on the “Pixel portfolio of devices” as well as Android software and AI developments.
The new phone lineup could represent the first significant shakeup of Google’s mobile strategy since the Pixel 6. The company is rumored to be introducing a mid-sized Pixel 9 Pro model that would have all the features of the largest version (now dubbed the Pixel 9 Pro XL) in an easier to hold design. There would still be a regular Pixel 9 at the event, but you would no longer have to choose between portability and performance.
A Pixel 9 Pro Fold (previously known as the Pixel Fold 2) would revamp Google’s foldable phone with many of the upgrades coming to the more conventional handsets.
All of the Pixel 9 phones are believed to get slightly faster Tensor G4 chips, more memory, and MagSafe-derived Qi2 wireless charging. They could have flatter sides and backs reminiscent of recent iPhones and the Galaxy S24. They may ship with Android 15, which recently reached platform stability that points to a relatively quick release.
The Pixel Watch 3 is poised to have a familiar design, but might include an XL variant with a larger 45mm case. IT will mainly serve as a showcase for Wear OS 5.
There’s also a possibility that Google might introduce a refined Pixel Buds Pro 2 set of earbuds at the Pixel 9 event, but it’s not yet certain that they’ll be ready in time.
Google has historically timed Pixel launch events for later in the year, particularly in October. A mid-August introduction could help the Pixel 9 garner attention where it risked being overshadowed by Apple’s usual mid-September iPhone rollout.
