You might have noticed that online readers are increasingly coming up against a wall while browsing the Web. A paywall, that is. If you pay, you can read. And while it seems to go against the roots of the Internet as a free space, paywalls are becoming increasingly popular among news publishers attempting to shore up flagging print revenues. According to this infographic from BestCollegesOnline.org, there are currently 300 U.S. newspapers with active paywalls, more than twice as many as there were last year. But while paywalls can have some benefit in terms of revenue, the overall results for publications have been very mixed.
